Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach grades 7-12 in a large city school. My school is 60% low income and is ethnically diverse. Five percent of students have special education plans which utilize inclusion and pull-out programs. At this time, there are approximately 1,000 students taking music classes. These classes include band, orchestra, choir, music theory, guitar and music appreciation.
Only a handful of students are able to participate in private lessons outside of school and many have limited exposure to professional performances.
I try to give my students everything they need to be successful in music. Working with my school community and grant writing is a very important part of my funding.
My Project
My school is 46% low income. Many of my students utilize the free and reduced lunch and breakfast programs. Everyday students ask me if I have any food that they can eat. I try to keep a few things on hand for my students. It would be nice to have a few granola bars and waters on hand to share with my when students when they need something to eat. They can eat one quickly or throw one in their bag with a 8 oz. water bottle. Another issue I am having this year is a new early lunch period which starts at 10:00 A.M. By "real lunch time" my students are already hungry and have many hours left in their school day. Many students even have after school activities, which makes the wait for their next meal even longer. A granola bar can go a long way through the day!
