My students are young musicians yearning for more musical knowledge. We are in the midst of our 2nd year as a school. My students come from all over the district by car or bus to our school to integrate STEAM into their curriculum. We laid the foundation for our music education journey last year! Now it is time to build upon their knowledge!
As a STEAM school, we integrate all subject levels.
Students make meaningful connections between music and what they are learning in reading, math, science, and social studies. We are constantly looking for new ways to connect across subjects and create hands-on, authentic experiences to learn, feel, and express concepts.
"Tell me, I forget; Show me, I remember; Involve me, I understand." said Carl Orff. Music education should be hands-on and authentic. I believe Carl Orff was a music educator before his time, advocating for a hands-on musical experience where students get to sing, play, and move. We strive to accomplish that with every music lesson at my school. Students leave my classroom having sung, played, and moved with smiles on their faces.
My Project
We currently have a beautiful class set of soprano ukuleles that the students use during lessons in general music. However, we have a beginning and an intermediate "Orff" ensemble that meets after school once a week. I have 40 students in the beginning group and 25 in the intermediate. We are looking to play some ukulele at various concerts and will need more than our class set in order for all the students to play together.
Many of my students have gone out to purchase their own ukuleles but we still can't accommodate all the students if we wish for them to play together.
I would love to add a few more ukuleles to our collection to help it grow.
The Waterman ukulele by Makala is a great brand to use for beginning ukulele players. They are sturdy and produce a great sound! The snark tuner will help me tune them quickly. Eventually, I'd love to get a few more tuners so that the students can tune their own instruments. My students can't get enough ukulele! I'm hoping that we can all play together!
