We are a seaside community that has been impacted by Hurricane Harvey. Our island town doesn't have a single home that was left undamaged. Many of my students' homes are still uninhabitable almost four months after the storm.
We thought that restarting school would add a sense of normalcy to the chaos that permeates our students' lives.
In some ways it has.
One of the things I've noticed since we've restarted is that our kids are dealing with more than we ever expected.
My Project
It's hard to get lost in a book when you are stuck in a desk. My goal is to transform my classroom into space where students want to lose themselves in a book, writing a paper, or even researching new material. Herein lies the need for comfortable chairs.
Hurricane Harvey might have been a blessing in disguise because I am now able to transform our space into something conducive to learning and enjoyment.
Those two concepts should not be mutually exclusive.
Our goal in education should be to drive learning but also allow a certain amount of freedom and individuality. This is what I would like to do.
