Mr. Budisantoso from Washington DC is requesting instructional technology through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need a better display for content. The resolution of the projectors our school currently use is too limited and faint to read computer code from the edges of the room.

In 2017, there were only 31 African-American students in our city who took an AP Computer Science exam. Of those 30, 6 passed. Of those 6, 5 went to private schools. In 2017, 31 took the AP CS Principles exam and only 13 passed. In a city where 50% of the population is African-American, we surely can do better. Our is 95% African-American and 50% female and ALL of our 10th graders are taking AP Computer Science. We've literally tripled the number of students of color and female students of color having access to a rigorous computer science education as well as achieving in the field.
But aside from just academics, I love my students because they are beautifully creative; they are resilient beyond belief; and they process and interpret the world with a point of view from their background, experiences, and community that is unique to them.
In order to solve the problems of the next 100 years, we need to have a technological workforce that is comprised of diverse sets of experiences and perspectives, but the vast majority of low-income students and students of color are unprepared to fill these roles.
Our academy was founded to expand opportunities for the students who most needed and deserved them. Our school serves students from all over the city, however, we specifically recruit students city who would otherwise not have access to a high-quality public high school. We are only in our 3rd year of existence, but from 2017 to 2018 our school alone broke records for access and achievement on AP Computer Science in our city.
But even with our school dedicating as many resources to our students to give them the best education possible, us teachers always are always looking for funding for things that don't make it into the budget.
Our classes have projectors, but not all of the students in our classes can see what's on the board. Not only is it hard to read text (such as computer code), but students in the back and sides of the classroom find it hard to see whats being projected in the front of the classroom.
Our school has one of the longest waiting lists in the city as so our classes are full (we take in as many kids in the city as we can). A Promethean Board provides a crisp and large view without degrading quality. Moreover, the functionality of a Promethean Board allows so much more flexibility and functionality than a normal whiteboard. I've taught with one before in a different city and it truly is a gamechanger. I'm hoping my students here at the Academy can experience the same thing!
