I teach a 2nd/3rd-grade special day classroom. My students are a fun bunch of diverse kids who love school and enjoy learning. They come to me with various skill levels and disabilities that can inhibit their learning, but together we find ways to celebrate and share their differences within our school community.
My students are silly and kind to one another.
They love to explore the world around them. My students learn in different ways, and my classroom gives them a place to do so. We create, dance, and laugh our way through our school days, allowing each student to feel successful.
My Project
My students are starting to notice what makes them unique and different from their classmates. One defining characteristic that my students are starting to notice is differences in expression of gender and sexuality. I want to expand our classroom library to include a number of titles about LGBT topics and gender identity. Tolerance and understanding of people different from ourselves is a hard and abstract concept to learn. However, the books in this project will allow my students to learn about LGBT individuals, their families, and contributions to society.
Students need to find ways to connect to literature, and they can only do so when the books in their classroom reflect who they are.
I want my students to feel empowered to do whatever they want in life, no matter how big their dreams might seem. Being able to read and learn about LGBT topics and individuals will help my students learn that it does not matter who you love or what gender you identify with. I know this group of books will become a treasured part of our classroom library, and students will be able to learn from them for years to come.
