Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Remember being in class praying that the teacher didn't call on you to answer that question? With a student response system, that dread will be eliminated. Interactive and anonymous, humiliation over a wrong answer isn't an issue. Looking like a dork for participating isn't either!
I teach 10th and 11th grade English at a continuation school in Southern California.
Located just miles from the border, my students live in high poverty and are deemed the most at-risk kids in the school district. All are danger of becoming drop-outs. Many have already faced the dangers of gangs, violence, incarceration, addiction, and abuse that most of us can't fathom.
Having a class full of students who rarely, if ever, have had success academically, makes it imperative to engage them immediately. One strategy is to use technology to generate high interest in the curriculum.
My Project
All too often, students will try to fly under the teacher's radar. They will not participate in class or volunteer answers out of fear (or yes, boredom). Yet, it is imperative for teachers to be able to quickly measure student understanding of a concept in order to effectively teach and reteach if necessary. With the Califone Student Response System, all students will be able to contribute to class discussions without any threat. A simple click will allow me to know which students have mastered the material and which need more direct help.
The student response system will transform teaching and learning in my classroom.
All students will benefit academically from on-going assessment. Yet, the anonymity and nonthreatening nature of the student response system will also give my reluctant learners the freedom to take risks academically, thus raising their confidence as students. And for most of my kids, a little self-confidence is all they need to make the leap from drop-out to doctor!
