My students need Scholastic 'Scope' Magazines to supplement my reading intervention class. With these magazines, students will have current, high interest articles which can be read in about fifteen minutes.
Our community reflects the negative impact of closed factories with household incomes 38% below the state average. Our high school only has a 77% graduation rate. Nearly 63% of our students are economically disadvantaged and almost one-fifth are identified as having a disability.
Limited by generational poverty, my students have few real-world experiences.
These factors, combined with the English Language Learners and migrant students, make learning a challenge for both students and teachers. I am dedicated to instilling in my students a desire to learn and to persevere. Inspiring students to meet rigorous academic standards and create their own futures is my goal. I am passionate about making a difference in my community by helping my students. It is also problematic as funds for professional development and resources are limited. With a school of approximately 75% free and reduced lunch fees, comes a lot of students that are reluctant to read and write to any extent. My students are awesome and I will try to help them in any way possible.
My Project
To overcome a poverty mindset in students and improve teaching strategies, I will implement the use of Scholastic Magazines within the classroom. Students will have up-to-date stories and articles from around the world to supplement the stories we already read in class. These short stories and articles are written at a very high level of interest for students. The magazines also have plays that students will be able to read in class. I have had a subscription to Scholastic Magazines in the past and the students absolutely loved them! I am excited to hopefully, once again, introduce these back into the classroom.
