My students need alternate seating in the classroom to help them find a space that works best for them. The wobble chair, stools, 10 balls, and 9 cushions will help me reach my students' diverse needs.
Many people say Hawaii is paradise. Although this may be true on the outside, it is a small sliver of what reality looks like when trying to support a family. Therefore, many schools in Hawaii fall under the Title 1 category (low-income schools), including the school I teach at.
Many students in my class come from low-income households, have broken families, or don't get much love or attention at home.
However, this never stops them from coming to school with a smile on their face and a "ready to learn" attitude.
Furthermore, the students in my classroom are unique because of their hearts, strength, and courage. Often times I'm overwhelmed with traumatic home-life stories that hide beneath those sweet smiles. And yet I've never been around such grateful, loving and compassionate human beings.
Each of these kids deserves the best, which is why I intentionally make a huge daily effort to love on my students with patience and empathy. After all, our time together is short, and I know that I am making a positive daily impact on these young minds.
My Project
Alternate seating in our classroom would be a dream come true! My students need a variety of seating options including a wobble stool, 10 ball chairs, floor cushions and 5 stools. The new furniture I am requesting will provide the students with a different option besides a hard chair. Students will be able to get comfortable in our classroom (sit, stand, kneel etc.) and work/learn more effectively. Giving the students the options to a variety of seating throughout the day will not only make them more comfortable, but this will also decrease attention problems and behavioral issues while increasing attention and focus in the classroom. The more the students can focus on learning the less I have to spend time correcting minor interruptions and thus more uninterrupted instruction time! This is a win-win situation for both teacher and student! :)
I wish I could give my students the world!
Unfortunately, many of my students come from disadvantaged homes and broken families. I would do anything to make their time in my classroom memorable and worthwhile. I believe that giving students a choice helps to empower them. When students are given the opportunity to choose their learning space, I believe that they will be more engaged and willing to learn. Through this project, I I want to maximize each students' learning experience by providing a better environment to be their best learning self! I can hardly wait to see how flexible seating will transform my classroom this year and the many years of students to come!
