This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach English at a Title I school in rural northeast North Carolina where 100 percent of our students receive free breakfast and lunch. My students range in reading levels and I'm working on getting them to love reading. I grew up having my own collection of books, and some of my students have been kicked out with just the clothes on their backs. They have come to me with a hatred of reading and I have made it my mission to get these students to enjoy reading. I teach students that vary in learning abilities from those that are reading on a low elementary level to those that are reading on above grade levels. My classes are 95% African American and the opportunities available to my students are apparent. I want these students to see that reading is a way to escape their everyday lives and reading is a key to get them places in life.
My Project
My students need to be engaged and a good book can get them there. I spend all of my extra money on books at yard sales and bookstores to keep my classroom collection growing. We need books that my students can relate to. They come from all different backgrounds and struggles and need to be able to make connections as they read so they can get lost in a book! My project last year have my students a place to get comfy with the purchase of beanbag chairs but now we need more reading materials to get lost in! Some titles are:The Bluford High Series, Eleanor and Park and more.
