Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a Special Education teacher in a Title I Elementary School. All of our students get free breakfast and lunch. This is the first step in assuring that they are able to devote their time to learning and not where their next meal is coming from. Many students that I get the pleasure to work with teach me BIG lessons on perseverance. I strive to make my learning environment conducive to how they learn. I have many different areas in which they can choose to settle in to. The favorite is a wobble seat that I got at Goodwill. I always keep my eyes open for different and fun seating for my very different and fun students. This wobble seat, however, has proven to be extremely helpful with multiple grade levels. ADHD makes it almost impossible for many students to sit still in a chair. I have tried small little tykes chairs, also from Goodwill, but they slide out from underneath the students that rock in them. These students can concentrate and can focus better if they are moving.
My Project
Giving my special needs students the alternative seating needed to keep them focused on their work is priceless. Keeping them safe in the learning environment is a must and these hokki stools have shown me the amazing work that can be done when they have an outlet for the wiggles!
I got extremely lucky to have found one of these seats at the GoodWill and the students try to take turns using it.
A set of these wobble seats would allow my students to build their minds and bodies at the same time. Not only does it help them concentrate it helps build their core muscles. This is essential when some special needs students do not have the ability to keep their bodies still.
