I teach in a Title 1 school in a rural community. Many of my students struggle to purchase regular school supplies, and they have very few resources at home to assist in learning. I have been at this school for 2 years, and I was surprised by how many students have never been to our public library. They either don't have transportation or their parent(s) are unwilling to take them. My students know they may come to my room to find books. It is important for me to make sure I have books that they can relate to.
I have been surprised by how many of my middle school students say they have never read a whole book on their own.
These children need to learn about the world outside of their immediate surroundings. They need to read about people who have overcome obstacles, who have broken families, who have lost both parents, who are in foster care, etc.
My Project
Putting these books in the hands of my students is crucial to helping them be successful readers. To help reach my students, I have book talks on Fridays to expose them to different genres and different authors. They are becoming interested in books they would never have looked at before. Novels like "Solo" and "Crossover" use modern-day themes to engage preteens and teenagers. Authors like Reynolds and Alexander are positively influencing kids to get out in this world and make a difference. My students are very interested in graphic novels, and I've included a few of these on this dream list. These are the types of books I need in my classroom. These are the books that can change my students' perceptions about reading.
Let's get engaging novels in their hands, so they can get off their phones and "plug into" a good book.
I want to make my class library a refuge for these kids. In order to do that, I need your help.
