By aiding in the purchase of much-needed yoga mats, you can help our young students get into better shape both physically and mentally. We started our after school ?Fun Yoga? last year, and despite our lack of resources, the program received a tremendous positive response from students. Enthusiastic and proud, the participants showed the entire school of students just how wonderful and fun yoga can be, demonstrating various techniques and positions as part of our school's year-end assembly. ?Fun Yoga? was such a success, we are continuing the program this year, with students from grades 4-8 returning to learn and do more.
After last year, however, we realized (painfully) that, for the program to be really effective, we simply need yoga mats. Currently, we are practicing on the hardwood floor, which is cold, uncomfortable, and, in many ways, unsafe. Although yoga is relaxing and fun, helping students to feel calmer, brighter, and more focused, our lack of mats is keeping our students from practicing yoga properly and productively ? keeping them from benefiting fully from this special system of exercises. You can change this situation with your helpful and generous support.
Our school building is the oldest in the Chicago Public School system, so our facilities are meager and antiquated, and our means are limited. In our urban-center school, our students come from varied social and ethnic backgrounds, but nearly 90 percent of them receive free lunch. Ours is not a ?resource-rich? school. We can offer a one-period-a-week gym class, but because of budget and schedule constraints, we cannot offer our students time each day for recess. To fight ?couchpotato-itis? they need more, and ?Fun Yoga? after school is an excellent way to do this.
As a certified yoga instructor, I truly believe in the benefits of yoga for children. You can make a difference in the health and well-being of our children. In order to sustain and expand ?Fun Yoga,? we need caring supporters like you to help provide the proper mats.
