My students are dreamers, problem solvers, and likely the most creative little people you will ever meet.
They are a happy group of first graders that love school, and they love to learn.
One hundred percent of our school qualifies for free breakfast and lunch, yet they don't let hardships stand in their way of learning. My students' economic situations are just as varied as are their family dynamics. We have military families, with a local National Guard Unit in our area and Hill Air Force Base close by. We aim to take good care of our military families. Our district includes an Indian Reservation and we have a high population of Hispanic students, many of whom have family members that work in the agricultural industry.
My Project
We have been asked by the Mayor of our city to teach our first graders lessons in Financial Literacy. This project will help me fulfill that request. Students will have the opportunity to earn pretend money based upon academic improvement and good behavior. They will be able to save and spend that money in our classroom store to buy items like pencils, stickers, toy animals, and other things first graders enjoy. They will also learn to work hard and save for higher priced items they wish to have. A culminating activity will be painting the banks, so the children have their own bank to start saving money.
In today's economic reality, it is more important than ever that we help children learn about managing money.
I am in the process of creating financial literacy flip charts and gathering songs that can help the children learn about saving and spending money as well as learning about the value of money. I have found some wonderful resources. A Bose speaker will project the sound of these charts and songs so all the children can participate and hear at the same time. It will be awesome!
I know the items for our classroom store and this speaker will help me teach these important financial literacy skills to my first graders. Thank you for considering our class project. We consider you a "treasure!"
