Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am writing this proposal for my high school vocal students who participate in our beginning, intermediate and advanced choirs. Our high school serves a large urban area and has a high percentage of students from low income homes. Many of students do not have the opportunity to experience high quality vocal instruction outside of the school setting. It is exciting to see them grow in their knowledge and excitement about vocal music. Many of them will participate in the program for three to four years.
My Project
Our students do not always come to school prepared for learning. Sometimes, we do not have the time to wait for them to act on their own. Unorganized, unprepared students are a rehearsal disaster. Sometimes it is better to provide them with basic tools that will help them engage in positive learning experiences and situations. My students noticed that things were running smoother when unprepared students received help and encouragement. Yes, giving students a 3 ring binder does this! It helps them get organized, stay on task and keeps them engaged in the learning that is taking place in the classroom.
My choir students are involved in learning difficult vocal music.
Music binders are an academic necessity if they are going to be successful in music. We are interested in teaching them organizational and note taking skills that will benefit them as they transition from high school to the next levels of learning. These are skills that will help them be successful at their next level of learning. We are also helping them develop the idea that they are part of a team. Everyone in the choir needs to have a functioning music binder where everything that they need to function at a high level is right where they need it. We are learning together, pulling in the same direction as we strive to succeed in common goals.
