My students are from a high poverty urban school that fosters creativity and innovative thinking while following the Common Core State Standards. My students potential to learn is only limited by their imagination. Together, we have dreamed up a project to engineer our own yoyos.
I want my students to think creatively and innovate, while making decisions based on learned experiences, and develop a love for learning.
Yo'n for Conservation is a community-based learning experience supported through a strong community partnership to give students a learning experience focused on using our own business to support local conservation efforts.
My Project
Yo'n for Conservation is an entrepreneur project that will introduce students to product design, manufacturing, and marketing. Using a cloud-based CAD program students will design a single fixed axle yo-yo. We will use a 3D printer to test prototypes and test each yo-yo to find a good design that works well and is reliable. The yo-yo will be sold at our school store for $3.00.
Proceeds from the sale of the fixed axle yo-yo will be reinvested back into the project and the remaining profits will go toward our conservation efforts to help save the endangered Great Lakes Sturgeon.
Yo'n for Conservation was created to educate our community on the benefits of a healthy lake sturgeon population. Our restoration efforts are focused on helping raise awareness and increase lake sturgeon population levels in the Great Lakes.
