My students come from various backgrounds, many of which being raised by a single parent or a grandparent who has had to step up and step in to raise them. Most of my students receive reduced-price or free lunch. My school is not a title one school-we miss by just a few percent, which unfortunately means, we have a lot fewer resources and staff than many other Title I schools in our county. Less staff, less funding, fewer materials--but not fewer children.
All of the students I personally serve, have learning disabilities.
These disabilities-among other things can cause children to have some serious emotional problems. My students face consistent academic struggles, in addition to all other challenges they are met with-be they academic, familial, social, or otherwise. Many students in our school also have trouble appropriately expressing emotions, due to unhealthy modeling in their homes, especially given the current world situation. Nonetheless, our students need serious help. We strive to create a safe place in our resource room and throughout our school, where children can work on filling in academic gaps and strengthen their emotional skills at the same time.
My Project
We would like to create an after school yoga club to help children learn some useful strategies they can use to improve their mental help and relieve the stress that we have all been facing this year. Students are suffering without having time to just relax and be with their friends and teachers. Getting this project funded will allow us all to destress and give students some of the much needed time to calm down and spend time with peers and adults in a non-academic way. Yoga and meditation can help students destress, regain focus, and improve their agility and strength.
