Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I work in a high needs urban school district in NJ. 99% of the students received free or reduced lunches. The school comprised of about 85% Hispanic students. For most of the students English is their second language and is not typically spoken at home.
I started doing meditation with my students which they enjoy and even asked to do it.
The students live high stress lives with some of them even working during the night. Yoga would be a big improvement to their stress management.
My Project
With the full support of the my administration and your donation, I would like to introduce yoga and mindfulness into my school district. There is a professional development for the entire school to provide tools and techniques for teachers to bring yoga into the classroom. In the classroom these techniques may be used for classroom management and provide a tool for students to relieve stress. It can also be used as a complementary discipline technique instead persistent suspensions. Yoga will also provide a life long stress management tool for the students.
Yoga will used to change the school atmosphere, reduce stress, and lower disciplinary actions such as suspensions.
I hope to first provide a professional development for all the teachers so they can start using small techniques in their classrooms. Then also provide yoga in the physical education classes. Also, provide yoga as a extra source of discipline to re-channeling energy. Yoga can be used by the students for as a life long technique.
