Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Over the past six years, I have had the absolute privilege of teaching at my school. Cox Academy is located in East Oakland, where the grand majority come from non-English speaking and/or low-income households. Many of the students I teach face high levels of trauma daily, including poverty, violence in the community, hunger and homelessness. My students face many challenges each day and I am in constantly in awe of their resilience and continued passion for learning.
Next year, for the 2018-2019 school year, I have been offered my actual dream job.
I will be teaching all grades at Cox, TK-5, social emotional and leadership skills. Over the summer I will be working to develop a cohesive curriculum to address four main domains: self identity, awareness of others, leadership skills and leadership in action in our community. I will be working with several different community programs to develop my ability to teach mindfulness, meditation and yoga to children and adults. My goal is to empower the students of Cox Academy to develop and grow as students and as members of their community.
My Project
Yoga helps kids and adults manage stress through breathing, awareness, meditation and healthy movement. Yoga helps build concentration and increases their confidence and positive self-image. Yoga makes kids feel part of a healthy, non-competitive group. I am excited to bring yoga, meditation and mindfulness to all students and community members at Cox Academy. These 30 yoga mats will be used by all 600 Cox students during class time, during our after school yoga program and by parents and staff during our community yoga program. These yoga mats will allow students to practice yoga within their own personal spaces and in a safe manner.
