Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

In the midst of a rigorous eight hour school day, students need time to stop, breathe, relax, and rejuvenate. The practice of hatha yoga is one way to work on balancing the natural stresses of a typical high school day. In order to achieve this, though, my students need yoga mats!

I teach at the only public high school in my district.

Our school is a Title I school, and the majority of students come from low socioeconomic backgrounds. Yoga club is a lunchtime club open to all grade levels, 9-12. Students are required to attend a lunch club or tutoring for thirty minutes of the lunch hour. After half a day of sitting in desks, yoga club allows my students to engage in gentle, therapeutic stretches and postures. Furthermore, students are drawn to yoga club because of the peaceful environment and the opportunity to slow down and relax in a safe space.

My Project

Yoga club will meet two times per week. Each yoga session will begin with a short centering activity, allowing students a moment to check in with themselves, mentally, emotionally, and physically. We will engage in simple breath work, allowing the nervous system to slow down and recover from the activities of the morning. Each yoga class will incorporate a different series of physical postures (asanas), but the focus will be on gently stretching and strengthening our bodies, while gaining awareness of how our bodies move and the sensations that we are generating. Yoga club will end with a short, reclined rest (savasana), again allowing the mind and body to slow down and integrate the energy gained through the physical postures. Students will learn that being in touch with our bodies, though the practice of yoga, will help cultivate sensitivity. This sensitivity can be used in infinite ways as we deal with the stresses that come along with school, family, and friendships.

As a yoga practitioner and yoga teacher in training, I am passionate about the positive impacts this practice has brought to my life.

I am inspired and motivated to bring this same opportunity to my students, most of whom have had no exposure to yoga. In the short term, yoga club will provide students with a safe, quiet space to relax and chill out, and over the course of time, I am hopeful that they will learn tools for healthfully coping with the stresses that life presents us with.
