My students need 8 yoga mats to do yoga after school.
My students have expressed curiosity about yoga as a stress-reducer. I have planned an after school yoga group that will meet twice a week. Students will learn healthy breathing techniques, gain flexibility and strategies to reduce stress.
They are wonderful!
They live in the south Bronx. They overcome many struggles to succeed in school. They are looking for ways to help decrease stress and increase success. They have heard and read about yoga, but they have not had the opportunity, materials or space to learn the practice.
The students will use these mats to learn, practice and teach yoga. They will be encouraged to teach the postures and techniques to their peers and community. The students will also learn about and reflect on nutritional and healthy living information.
I taught yoga in another school with a similar group of students.
The students said it transformed their lives and teachers and peers saw the profound effects. Not only were they calm and confident, they ate better and helped their families and peers learn yoga and breathing techniques.
