Mr. Shanteau from Jacksonville FL is requesting flexible seating through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need a productive, peaceful way to start their days, and finish their days on mats, not on the floors. We need yoga mats.

I teach 2nd grade math in a impoverished neighborhood in Jacksonville, Florida. I am going into my 3rd year. Every year I fall more in love with my students and my profession. My students do not come from much and before I teach academics, I have to get my students in the right mindset for school. If my students do not enjoy school they will not learn. Through past experiences in school or at home a lot of my students are not at school with learning as their main priority.
It takes a while to create a close knit community but I’ve done it the past two years and there is nothing more beautiful than seeing a group of 8 year olds that come in and don’t know each other or hate each other and whether they like it or not they become like a family.
They become my family.
It is all mental for my students. If the students are not mentally ready for school they will not learn that day. I have tried many different activities to help get them ready and nothing works more than doing 10 minutes of yoga. Once the students get over the "funny" music and can get into the task at hand they begin to enjoy the yoga.
We will use these mats for yoga and also guided meditation.
Both these activities get the students mentally prepared for their day and can help us unwind from a long day of learning. I also use yoga and guided meditation in the middle of the day if I feel like a break is needed and we need to re-center ourselves.
