We are a Title I school that is at 85% free and reduced lunch rates. The students I work with every day, battle tremendous challenges, but they are incredibly bright and resilient and they will make tremendous progress this year despite the challenges they face.
In a school like mine, which serves a low-income, diverse population, teaching wellness sends a message to students that they matter, in a world where a lot of outside forces are making them feel like they don’t.
The weight that many of my students carry on their shoulders is far beyond what any six to twelve-year-old should have to handle, but still, their bubbly faces bounce into my school each morning, ready and eager to learn.
My Project
Breathe for change is a yoga and mindfulness program that focuses on educating educators to help teach students and staff healthy skills to use within their school day.
Wellness tools like mindfulness and yoga empower students to love, take care of, and advocate for themselves.
Tools like how to self sooth with breathing and focusing on the present moment. These tools help our students to cope with the trauma that accompanies growing up in poverty and systemic oppression.
This program will help me to become a certified yoga instructor, which will allow me to teach my students, staff and community an amazing coping skill to improve their lives.
