My students need the yoga mats, yoga and mindfulness card decks, books, games, and compact disc to use during our group lessons. The essential oil will be used to make eye pillows for relaxation activities.
I am the school counselor at a Title I elementary school (low income/high poverty) consisting of approximately 500 students that serves a high percentage military students (both active duty and retired) and their families.
I am offering mindfulness classes for our students that struggle with a variety of life stressors that stem from living in poverty to experiencing multiple deployments and changes in duty stations that results in moving to a new hometown and entering a new school.
The materials for the mindfulness classes, card decks, yoga mats, compact disc, and other additional materials needed to make eye pillows for relaxation activities will provide students with visual prompts, mindful strategies, and simple yoga poses they can implement both in and out of the school setting.
My Project
Yoga and mindfulness activities will consist of a mix of yoga postures, brain boosting movements, breath exercises, visualizations, mindfulness activities, and community-building games. Wellness, positive psychology and character-building discussion points address the whole child – physical, social and emotional, while improving learning-readiness.
The goal of Yoga and Mindfulness for Elementary Classrooms is to positively impact the overall school culture and climate by providing students with the important skills they can use in and out of the classroom for life long learning, health and well-being.
Students participating in this program will helps to acquire the tools they need to foster a more harmonious, learning-friendly school environment and increase their overall social and emotional skills.
