My students are awesome! They are total rock stars! Some of them come from very difficult home lives as we are a low income district and many do not have adequate family support.
Despite facing all of these challenges outside of school, they still come in every day to try to learn!
Some have better coping skills than others and some need some help to calm down and deal with their feelings first so they can focus on their learning. That is exactly what kinds of skills I hope they gain from this project through after school yoga and meditation.
My Project
I have been practicing yoga in my own life for over a decade and found that its benefits go far beyond the physical and extend into the mental and emotional regulation that we need in order to feel balanced. I would like my 7th grade students to see the benefits as well.
While education is essential, learning can not occur if students are unable to focus and identify and control their emotions utilizing appropriate outlets.
In small groups, I plan to work with 7th grade to teach the fundamentals of yoga and meditation. I would like to use yoga as a means to teach students coping skills and how to calm down and deal with their everyday problems.
Through a pre and post assessment of students' ability to cope, I will be able to gauge how to best devise a yoga curriculum to help students utilize, meditation, stretching, and deep breathing to develop better coping strategies to use both in the classroom as well as in their everyday lives.
I am short three blankets for my students to help make them comfortable and I also have very bright fluorescent lights that is not good for a clam, warming, relaxing environment. This lighting will help keep kids calm and find their center.
