We are a school with a Mandarin immersion program. My class is consists of 24 kindergarteners (age 5) who spend 80% of their school time learning in Mandarin and 20% in English. More than half of my students come from a non-Chinese speaking background. They are doing a great job learning the target language through various subject areas, such as science, PE, social studies, and math.
No kids will ever be inspired by worksheets with mechanical drills.
I believe that children learn the best through hands-on experience. In my class I design activities that allow kindergarteners to touch, feel, and manipulate objects. I am a big fan of team work activities because young children need a lot of practice on negotiating and coming up with an agreement. My goals are to have my students become creative problem solvers and good team players.
My Project
On the days that we cannot go outdoors, such as rainy days and spare the air days, my kindergarteners have the other kind of fun staying indoors--we do yoga! I am surprised by how much they like to follow the instructor on the screen and try their best to do each pose. There are many benefits of doing yoga in the classroom, besides it fulfills our P.E. minutes, it helps the students to learn better after they get their wiggles out. Our room is always filled with laughter when we do yoga exercise. However, some challenges that we face include the tile floor being too hard for the kids to lay on and stretch. On the carpeted part of the classroom, the students can get really crowded and thus hurt each other as they kick or move around. Having a yoga mat can help them define their area and therefore minimize the unnecessary accidents.
