My students need to understand the lessons being taught in my classroom. Using the bilingual science materials and the vocabulary building materials will help them retain the info and build confidence while becoming fluent in English.
My students are often from low-income families with parents who work long hours just to make ends meet. The majority of my students receive free or reduced price meals at schools. Some come to school without the bare essentials like pencils and paper.
Although most of my reading students face challenges with basic reading skills and fluency, they are eager and willing to learn.
Some of my students are English Language Learners who are often confused, scared and frustrated by being in a classroom where nothing is familiar. Having content area materials and supplies that are bilingual and easily understood will help make the learning process an enjoyable experience for ALL of my students.
My Project
I think it is imperative to have a resource such as "Activities for English Language Learners Across the Curriculum" to make sure ALL of my students are getting a quality education. Pictures are understood universally, and "Graphic/Bilingual Science books" will further increase comprehension of those skills.
Having a "Big Box of Easy to Read Words" and "First Words" will allow my English Language Learners to engage in fun activities while building their knowledge of basic vocabulary words.
I want ALL of my students to feel as if they are an important part of our "school family". "Mi clase es su clase"!
