Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

I am a third-grade teacher in a pre-kindergarten-through-eighth-grade school in East Flatbush, Brooklyn. We are a Title 1 school, and the majority of our students come from low-income families. Next year, I will be teaching approximately thirty third-grade students ranging in age from eight to ten, nine of whom will be repeating the third grade for the second time. Hands down, the most coveted learning center for my third graders last year was my listening center. A listening center is a boom box with multiple sets of headphones, allowing several students at a time to listen to a book on tape and practice their reading skills. Unfortunately, my listening center started to malfunction halfway through the year, and by June there were only two working headsets left! I believe that listening to books on tape is an incredible help for students, especially those who are performing below grade level. It is my greatest priority to have a new, functioning listening center in my room when school begins so that all of my students will be able to use it. I am thus requesting funding for a deluxe listening center from Calloway House. This listening center comes with a multi-featured boom box, six sets of deluxe headphones, and a junction box, and it provides high-quality listening for either individuals or small groups of students. Please help by sponsoring this proposal for a new listening center, complete with headphones. My students and I thank you! Oh, and incidentally... my students came up with the title of this proposal!
