Help me give my students a more engaging learning experience as they do math collaboratively either sitting or standing with these height adjustable tables with white dry-erase tops and metal bar stools.
The seventh and eighth grade students from our small rural town in southwest Missouri have bright futures ahead of them. They come into Junior High nervous and excited about what their future holds. Just like students in other parts of the country, my students face many challenges in life, but they persevere, working through the challenges they face day after day. Although the poverty rate is high in our K-8 school, with more than 82% of students receiving free or reduced-price lunches, our school spirit and pride in our community are even higher.
Do you remember what it was like to walk into math class in Junior High?
It can be intimidating! My job is to teach these students to do math, and I believe creating a classroom that is inviting and fits the needs of my students is the first step.
My Project
As you may know, twelve and thirteen year olds have a lot of energy, and many have a difficult time sitting at a desk hour after hour at school. Students need options, and this standing height table will give my students the opportunity to move while working standing up, or they can sit down using one of the bar stools, if they like.
I want my students to get involved in their learning and explore real world problems together.
Doing math is definitely more engaging than just learning math. The marker board top on these tables will allow them to work collaboratively in a more engaging way than typical individual and group work, and the novelty of being allowed to write on the table will help keep them engaged. Ultimately, better engagement will lead to a better understanding of math, which is my real goal.
