Help me give my students improve their listening skills by using Listenwise into order to become better listeners about really interesting topics that combine history with current events!
My awesome eighth grade U.S. History students are creative, thoughtful and full of questions! They absolutely love hands-on, active, engaging projects and challenges that allow them to think outside the box to find solutions! We are a diverse Title I school with lots of different groups of students. They come to school each day ready to try new things and reach their highest potential. Truly, they are my inspiration!
Each child in my classroom loves learning.
We incorporate a variety of learning strategies, group work, and learning options to ensure that each student's needs are met. I try to make history come alive for them as they study from the framing of the Constitution to the Industrial Revolution. My students love to be creative, and we are working on lots of "out-of-the-box" projects.
My Project
Why practice listening? Because listening comprehension is fundamental to literacy.
Research shows that if you are not a good listener, you won't be a good reader.
At its core is the basic tenet that reading comprehension is the result of listening comprehension plus decoding (Gough and Tunmer, 1986). Now there is new research evidence concerning a growing number of children who fail to develop adequate reading comprehension skills primarily due to poor listening comprehension. (Hogan, 2014)
And since students can generally listen to 2-3 grade levels above what they can read, we can use the power of listening to introduce more complex language, vocabulary, and topics. Read aloud and other listening activities have long been effective for introducing advanced vocabulary in context. Building vocabulary and background knowledge have been proven keys to reading comprehension outcome.
