This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are all really good kids and are eager to learn, but most come from very disadvantaged backgrounds. The town has high poverty so the students don't have as many opportunities or tools at home as others might.

We want to give these students as much of a helping hand as we can in their academic lives.

We try to find a variety of ways to engage the children and keep them excited about coming to school. We collaborate across subjects to reinforce learning throughout the day.

My Project

Our school strives to instill a love of reading in our students, which can easily be lost as children get into the middle school grades. To that effect, we implement literature reading within our math classes for at least 30 minutes a week. I am a second-year teacher with few classroom resources, and by having classroom sets of novels I can put more of a concentrated effort into making sure everyone is included in the reading.

I want to make my students realize that an interesting story can also include mathematical concepts, even if they didn't initially realize they are there.

These two popular and well-loved titles will help demonstrate this to the students. Having enough copies for each student to have their own in class will help keep the students engaged and excited to participate.
