Yes We Can Pass the End of Course Exam

My students need 10 copies of each of 6 book titles such as "Where the Red Fern Grows" for an independent reading project over winter break.

"Yes we can!" pass the end of course exam. Help our 10th grade World Literature class develop the reading skills to pass the end of course exam and develop a habit of reading beyond the classroom by establishing an independent reading program.

This is the first year that students will be required to take a state developed end of course exam in World Literature. No longer is passing the class enough. Passing the end of course exam is a requirement for graduation. The exam will have a strong emphasis on reading. Therefore, we must promote reading both within and beyond the classroom. This donation will allow us to establish an independent reading program in our classroom.

For some students, the time allotted in class is simply not enough to prepare them for the end of course exam. We must reinforce reading beyond the classroom for academic and entertainment purposes. In general, but especially over breaks, we will encourage independent reading. A list of approved books will be given to students, providing them with choices. Students can choose books based on their current reading level and/or interests. Upon completion of a book, students can take a comprehension test to demonstrate their knowledge of the chosen novel. If reading inspiring novels is not motivation enough, extra credit will be given for each test passed.

Often choices are made out of convenience rather than intent. This is where you come in. Students are more likely to attempt a novel if they can borrow one from a teacher than if they had to acquire the novel on their own. Students will be able to check out a single novel at a time and must return it before selecting another. This provides a structure for a program that can sustain itself for years to come. Giving them choices now in what they read will allow them to have choices in the future because of their education. Thanks for your support!
