Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Do you believe all children can achieve? I do! Everyday I walk into my fourth grade classroom, I tell my reader's I believe in them and they deserve the best education.
I have 14 intelligent fourth graders.
Some come bused in from far away neighborhoods, some walk from the neighborhood. Most of my students are Latino and are English learners, the rest of my students are African American who are learning Mainstream English. We are a low income and low performing San Francisco Public School. My goal is to close the achievement gap. My students have many challenges at home so I make my classroom a safe, pleasant, place where children can read from lots of wonderful books.
My Project
Part of closing the achievement gap is access to Mainstream English. I try to expose my students to literacy as much as possible because they do not have a lot of it at home. I am hoping to get this donation so I can help my lowest readers with the books on CD, as well as my on grade readers who are struggling with comprehension. Grammar is very important but can be a dull subject to teach, and my students need an engaging and exciting way to develop grammar skills. I would like the grammar games to use in centers as well as with students in Mainstream English Language Development. Let's not forget about math, many of my students still don't know their addition and subtraction facts. So any hands on manipulatives, or multiplication relay races I can use to inspire them to get their basic facts down is cherished. The rewards are quite helpful in setting goals for students to achieve.
We all need a little incentive once in a while, and my students love a challenge to earn a reward.
These materials will help to enliven our classroom with the spirit of achievement.
