Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

My students are so full of life and enthusiasm! They have great personalities, they’re hilarious and love making music with me in my music class. Unfortunately, however, this is very inner city Washington, D.C. - so the school’s student population is 100% on free and reduced-price lunch. Many struggle with immense stress from their home lives. Often, this stress manifests itself in depression and aggressive behavior. But they are great, resilient children who want to learn and make a difference!

My Project

"The way I see it as soon as a baby is born, he needs to be issued a ukulele." (Linus from Peanuts)

My students have been begging me to play the ukulele since the day I brought mine in for music class.

Sometimes little ones will join me during their recess, and when I let them play it, their eyes light up! I have first-hand seen the joy that music brings to these kids, but I don’t have the sufficient funds to let these children have this opportunity. Help me bring some light into their lives- playing an instrument is a skill (especially the ukulele) that can bring yourself and others so much joy! Music is pure magic in this way.
