Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach 2nd grade in an inner city school district just north of New York City. Our students come from a variety of cultural and ethnic backgrounds.
Due to these cultural and ethnic backgrounds the students are struggling with grasping concepts taught inside the classroom. My students need time to work independently, or be assisted one-one with the teacher. Individualization is a very important component of a student's academic process. It is also crucial to set up learning centers in the classroom for students to work independently. These learning centers will provide the opportunity to establish areas of varied curriculum subjects and levels. This year the class is an integrated classroom, in which half of the students are classified with a learning disability. This makes the need for these centers even more crucial because it gives me time to work with each student individually.
We need five Instant Learning centers (capitalization, phonics, contractions, antonyms and synonyms) to help reinforce reading skills taught in the classroom. Also, we need some write and wipe markers to use with these centers. The instant learning centers will allow the students to work independently in the area of Language Arts.
My students will get a chance to work on their understanding of basic writing skills by using the capitalization and punctuation center. Students will also get a change to practice phonics skills that are taught during instructional time with the assistance of the Phonics instant learning center. They will also give me the opportunity to monitor my students' progress in these areas.
Since my students come from backgrounds with social lack of parental attention it is necessary for me to provide as many learning opportunities as possible within the classroom setting. Your contribution will enable me to meet New York State standards as well as my personal goals for my students.
