Students coming from an economically disadvantage home are more likely to enter Kindergarten lacking basic school readiness skills. Simple skills like writing their name, holding a pencil, letter/sound recognition, and number recognition are lacking. Our school is a Title 1 funded school. Parents in our area lack basic reading, writing, and arithmetic skills themselves.
We must not give up on students no matter what background they come from.
Kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd grade when students must learn the basic skills needed to become good readers.
My Project
The resources I have asked for will enable my student's to learn to be better readers. If a student is a poor reader by fourth grade then they are more likely to always be a poor reader. These resources will enable the student to be better readers by reading materials that are of high interest level and on their level. When students are presented with materials that are too hard for them, they become frustrated and shut down. I have seen how motivated students become to read independently or with a peer or teacher.
Students have said to me, "I didn't know I could read." Yes you can read!
