I teach at Washington Irving Elementary. Irving is part of the Chicago Public Schools, and serves 89% low-income families. Due to continued cuts in state and federal support, we have experienced many changes and have had to cut many things out of our daily and yearly activities. It is truly sad that our students miss out on the many extras that form important memories and experiences attached to this period of their lives, and is especially true as they daily face many struggles and challenges. Irving is a place where they can feel safe, a place where they can ask for and receive help and guidance, a place where they can put aside their worries to enjoy being a kid. Looking back on your own youth there are many memories of friends, dances, eighth grade trips, clubs, a favorite teacher, and so much more. However, if you can't remember you can always open your Junior High Yearbook! Our students have never had the pleasure of having a yearbook to help document these memories. I would like to change this as of next year for sixth, seventh, and eighth grade students. I believe that being part of the Yearbook Committee will give students the opportunity to roll up their sleeves and dedicate themselves to a project on which they can work hard and truly feel proud. The Yearbook Committee will be planned, executed, and produced by the students that join the committee, and volunteer teachers will provide guidance and support. I have joined my commitment to this project with the upper grade writing teacher, and several other teachers that love the idea and also believe in the importance of this project. In this proposal I am requesting assistance in purchasing digital cameras designated for The Yearbook Committee so that students who join can learn the art of photographing events, lay-out editing to work toward the final product through hands-on experience and experimentation. Using digital cameras are key as they allow students to easily edit and choose the perfect picture. This will allow students to learn through direct experience with little to no expenditures as they view pictures on the camera or a computer. I am requesting your assistance to purchase 3 digital cameras, memory cards, tripods, etc. Through this project I truly believe students will learn to work together toward a common goal. This will work to give students experiences to communicate with adults and fellow students, to schedule and look forward toward an end goal and finished product to which they can feel pride and accomplishment, and to be able to encapsulate these memories forever. Your help will be invaluable toward this goal and appreciated by the 180 students next year, and hundreds of students to follow in the years to come. And, as these students grow up and move on in their lives, they can always look back and remember that they had a hand in helping others to remember.
