I teach fourth grade at a Chicago Public School in the Woodlawn neighborhood. I am so lucky to have a class size of only 17!!! (I know, how abnormal is that???) I want so badly to be able to start guided reading with my students during our reader's workshop block in the mornings. My students would benefit an incredible amount by sharing my attention with just 4-5 other students, and the other students in the class would benefit because it would really push them to become independent learners/readers during guided reading time. Here is the one main issue stopping me from having guided reading - sets of 5-6 books ON MY STUDENTS' DIFFERENT READING LEVELS. I tend to have 6 books that are way too low, or six books that are way too high for my students, but I am really, really, really lacking in books that are at a level that is JUST RIGHT for my fourth graders. I am asking for 5 sets of 6 books to start my guided reading time with my students in 2006. The sets will be varied by reading level, but they will all be high-interest books that will help my students understand how to make inferences and connections with texts that they are reading. This will benefit me because I will be able to implement guided reading - a great strategy for increasing student literacy levels; this proposal will also benefit my students because it will give them more of that very much needed small-group, personal time with their teacher.
