Our school has around 500 students from diverse backgrounds. Most of our students come from rural areas, though we do have several that come from nearby cities. About half of our students come from economically challenging circumstances.
Our 4th graders continue to amaze me every day!
The energy, enthusiasm, creativity, curiosity, and love these students bring with them to school despite their circumstances motivate me to provide them the best possible educational experience.
Our school has made amazing progress the last three years! In 2015, we earned full accreditation from the state. Additionally, we were recently recognized as a winner of Virginia’s 2017 Board of Education Distinguished Achievement Award! This award is given to schools who met all state and federal benchmarks and made progress toward the goals of the governor and the board. It was only awarded to 20% of public schools in Virginia this year!
My Project
This year, I decided to experiment with flexible seating options in my classroom. I wanted to see it if would help my students, particularly those who struggle with sitting still and maintaining attention. I started out buying a few of several different items.
It turns out that it worked!
Many of my students are more focused when they are able to move slightly while they are in their seats. I also have fewer students out of their seat.
My students loved two seating options best best: wobble chairs and yoga balls. Of the six options I have in my classroom, they are most excited when they get to sit at these areas. Therefore, I would like to set up two separate seating areas with these items. This request is to help fund the yoga balls. I have created a separate request for the wobble chairs.
