My Students

Eighth grade is a time of new beginnings as it is the preparation year for high school. My students are excited about the math concepts we are going to explore this year. A majority of my students come from low-income households, making it difficult to purchase the supplies they need to truly dive into the mathematics.

Without fail, I am asked innumerable times a day how I am doing, given hundreds of high-fives and fist bumps, and participate in many a victory dance with my kind students.

One of my classes consists of 10 students with special needs, and not one of those students ever gives up. Of all of my students incredible qualities, their amount of determination and perseverance continues to shock me.

My Project

Because I teach in an old school in a low-income area, classroom fixtures, such as whiteboards, are often pushed far passed their glory days. The whiteboard in my classroom is so old, it has permanently been stained from previous, frequent use. Students who do not sit in the front row have trouble reading the information written on the whiteboard, as it has turned more of a gray color.

My students are missing vital information and problem examples because of the state of the whiteboard.

I write the daily agenda, the lunch menu, the weekly tutoring schedule, and assignment information on the board as well as working out example problems. Students also use the whiteboard to demonstrate their own work. My whiteboard is a crucial tool in teaching my students, yet I am rarely able to use it effectively because of its condition.
