Deep in the heart of our city, there lies a magical place where brilliant children, more than 90% of whom receive free breakfast and lunch, survive the struggles of their daily lives and work tooth and nail to exceed all expectations in the face of severe poverty and one of the highest crime rates in the country.
My students surprise me every day.
They are some of the most creative and energized kids I've seen, and in a school with such rigorous academics, challenging curricula, and the highest expectations, the need for creative outlets such as music is vital in helping to mold well-rounded people and reaching the whole child.
When you think of your childhood music rooms, what comes to mind? In most cases, a set of xylophones is surely part of that picture. Xylophones, glockenspiels, and vibraphones have been a major staple in the music classroom for decades, and rightly so.
These instruments open up a child's musical world so much more than basic rhythm instruments by allowing opportunities to create chords, melodies, accompaniments, and improvisations.
Unfortunately, my students are not awarded the luxury of these fantastic musical tools, leaving a gap in their musical development. The addition of these instruments would greatly impact my students' musical experience and contribute to the basic music competence they all deserve.
