In my first year working in a new school system, I inherited a program that had around ten students in the band in 6th through 12th grades. Now in my third year, the band has grown to over 100 members! Going forward, we are expecting even more growth!
The students are special and deserving because they have bought into a program and vision that had very little prestige when they first joined.
Week after week, they put in extra rehearsals and more practice time individually to grow as musicians and become better overall students.
My middle school band has no xylophone at the school. In fact, the school only has one bell kit. Each year, I have extremely talented percussion students. However, they are unfortunately unable to fully express themselves musically or receive a well-rounded education in percussion studies that they need to prepare them for band at the high school level.
Having a xylophone at the middle school is an absolute must in helping my young percussionists achieve the skills they need to have.
This will be the first step in many in increasing our percussion inventory at the middle school. In the process, I believe it will increase my students desire to grow as percussionist reading mallet music!
