These xylophones will help my students to become creative thinkers. Creative experiences provide for robust, memorable learning. Through performance they will become better communicators and will learn how to collaborate with others. This will also give them hands on experience.
Our school is a very diverse school.
We have 64 different countries represented at our school and over 46 different languages spoken. We also have a poverty rate of 93%. Our students have a great desire to learn and are provided with a safe and comfortable learning environment. We engage our students on many levels and are developing creative, critical thinkers who will be able to succeed in high school and college. Because of our diversity we need funds to cover many teachers to help the students who are new to this country. There are very few funds to cover extra equipment for the music classroom. The music program is funded by myself with a little help from the school. Each year we choose a different country to study. We study the culture, arts and more. By the end of the year each classroom has a better understanding of the country that has been studied. This allows our students from the country being studied to become an active part of the learning process.
My Project
The country that we will study at our school for the 2014/15 school year is Nigeria. Nigeria is known as the heart of African music. Music has been passes along for generations and the xylophone is a important part of their performances. The xylophone is used to shadow the lead singer by providing ostinato and melodic patterns for accompaniment. We will be able to teach the students how to perform these short melodic patterns which will enhance their ability to follow simple notation both melodic and rhythmic. The students will also be able to improvise (make it up as you go along) which will enhance their creative critical thinking skills.
A engaged student is a successful student.
These xylophones will allow the student an opportunity to participate and give them more opportunities to learn. The ability to play an instrument will generate excitement and a passion for class. If the students are fully engaged it will make learning fun and will keep the attention of the students.
