My Students

We are a high poverty New York City public school in Queens, Astoria. Our school has a very diverse population. We have students that come from different parts of the world. We have a lot of English Language Learners, Special Education and Gifted and Talented students as well as general education students.

We love our school and we love our students.

Our students are excited to learn! We have a great community and supportive parents. As a music teacher I want to give our students opportunities to learn and play!

My Project

In pre-k we learn that X is for Xylophone. In this case,​ it is an amazing instrument with a beautiful sound that our elementary school children get to play.

Not all xylophones are created equal.

This series of instruments are called Orff instruments after Carl Orff who designed a program for young children to be successful and creative in music.

Depending on the song, certain bars of the instruments can be taken off, eliminating unpleasant note combination. As a result students can play any notes and improvise together and it would sound very nice and pleasant (often in pentatonic scale).
