My students need a writing area where they can go to be motivated to feel like real writers.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
I teach kindergarten, an age group that is ready and excited to learn. My school is in a high-need community--over 90% of the students receive free or reduced lunch. Most of the students have had no school experiences before kindergarten. They are exposed to very little literature in the home.
A new world is opened up to my class when they discover books in my classroom. They love to be read to and soon discover that they can "read" pictures themselves to tell the stories. They then get very excited that they can form written words and write their own books. The class written books are the first chosen when students go to the classroom library. The students feel empowered that they have published work.
Most of the student writing is done at student tables. Students must go to several areas of the classroom to get needed supplies and materials, or they are given a set of standard supplies. This work is completed no differently than most of the other classroom projects. A writing center is needed to consolidate all writing supplies which will included word banks and picture dictionaries. This will be the student publishing center. The variety of materials at hand will allow the kindergartners to be more creative in their publications. They will learn how to use reference materials to enhance their work. Writing will become extra special since the students will get to travel to the writing center to work just like real authors do.
I believe that a positive kindergarten experience will affect the entire school career of a student. Truly motivating students in all subject areas lays the foundation for success. If students believe that they are capable, they will excel. I want my students to believe that they are real writers so that they can build their writing skills each year all the way through college. I want my students to have a positive attitude about writing that will last a lifetime because attitude is everything!
