My students need 70 composition notebooks, one per student to keep track of the writing they do throughout the year.

Middle school is tough for everyone - help my students navigate the ins and outs of adolescence and improve their writing skills at the same time! I teach 65 of the most remarkable 8th graders at a high-needs, art-based charter school. In our Language Arts class, we strive to improve our reading, writing and overall communication skills while exploring ourselves and the world around us. Each class starts with a "Do Now," a quick written response that addresses a topic we've covered in class, prepares students to think about a topic yet to be covered, or just allows students a safe space to express themselves before buckling down for the day's work. Through these short writings, I've gotten to witness the knowledge my students are gaining, understand what they bring to the table, and get to know my students better as individuals.
I am astounded by the thoughtfulness my students display in their work and I am anxious to show them what great writers they are and how they can improve. Although I asked each student to bring in a Do Now journal at the beginning of the year, few were able to do so. Only five lonely journals sit in my classroom today. The problem is not getting my students to write - it's giving them the materials to do it meaningfully.
These composition notebooks will impact my students in powerful ways. They will allow students to hold onto each daily entry and see their progress and improvement through the rest of the year. They will provide a space for conversation between student and teacher as I will be able to respond to different entries and be an active audience to my students. They will give students ownership over the writing process. Finally, they will serve as a unique record of their lives during the 8th grade year as they prepare to transition to high school.
Your help will deeply impact the lives of my students by allowing them a productive outlet to express themselves and a space to improve skills at the same time. You can make it easier for us to meaningfully incorporate writing into each day. Thanks for your support!
