My students need a professional writer and week-long workshop that will bring their primary source research to life and challenge their intellectual lives.
My students are artists who think about the world and their learning in an abstract way. They come from diverse backgrounds and are all very proud to go to our school, which serves as their home away from home.
My classes are mixed levels, and every student has a particular talent that allows them to shine, in and out of the classroom.
They all are committed to various art forms and look for ways to incorporate themes and ideas from our class into their work.
My Project
I plan on bringing Erin Osmon, a professional writer based in Chicago, IL, to South Carolina for a series of writing workshops with the entire tenth grade. Erin Osmon is a writer and editor who covers music and culture. Her work has appeared in the Pitchfork Review, SPIN, Chicago Reader, FLOOD, Red Bull Music Academy Daily, Time Out Chicago, Chicago Sun-Times, Chicago Tribune, Chicago Magazine and other print and web publications. She also produces and writes longform liner notes for reissues of historic albums. Her book about the musician Jason Molina, titled "Riding with the Ghost", is published by Rowman & Littlefield.
This project will make a dramatic difference in the lives of over 150 students by providing them an opportunity to learn about success in professional writing and to work with one of the freshest voices in biography today.
My students are reading Osmon's book "Riding with the Ghost" (a music biography about the late Jason Molina) in our English II class and they will be creating their own primary source research project with the guidance of this text and Erin Osmon. I teach many Creative Writing majors who are hoping to become professional writers. This project will not only fuse a collaboration between creative writing and research, but students will be able to study what it takes to "make it" in the literary world.
