I teach 23 first grade students all academic subjects in a low to middle-income neighborhood school in an urban school district. I loop with these students, meaning that I get them in first grade and stay with them as their teacher through the third grade. The resources that I want will benefit these children for several years.
I have been teaching for 13 years, and until this year, I have not felt comfortable teaching writing. I have finally figured out a system that seems to work for me and my students. I am requesting these resources to implement my new writing system with my children as soon as possible.
In order to fully implement this the way that I think it will work best, I feel that I need appropriate writing paper with red, blue, and dotted lines, 2-pocket folders, a magnetic/dry-erase poster-sized piece of writing paper to teach lessons on, a set of dry erase markers for use on the magnetic paper, and an electric pencil sharpener for the children to keep a nice sharp pencil.
Since I am looping up to the second grade with my current class, I will be able to implement this program in its fullest form as soon as I get these materials. Currently, we are writing on notebook paper – very inappropriate for first grade students. I have to sharpen our pencils in the health room once a week because the sharpener we have simply eats the pencils without sharpening them. I would love to be able to teach writing without having to worry about paper and pencils.
Writing is such an important thing to get under your belt as youngster. It is very difficult to try to teach good writing skills and proper grammar all in the fourth grade – the year of our writing test in North Carolina. I want to give my students a strong foundation in writing from the beginning. Please help me by funding these resources for my students.
