Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The students in my kindergarten classroom are from a low socioeconomic area in a rural town in southwestern Arizona. We are located close to the border of Mexico. Some students are English language learners and children of military families. They are curious about everything around them. But many of them lack educational support away from the classroom.
My kindergarten students are eager to be 21st-century students learning with a curriculum that promotes and supports science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics.
My favorite quote is a Chinese proverb: "Do not confine our children to your own learning, for they were born in another time."
My Project
Many of my kindergarten students are struggling to read. To make things worse, they are stuck at home during this pandemic trying to learn remotely and I need to get materials to them that can help them learn to read sight words. The state standard says kindergarten students must know at least 50 sight words. The struggle is real in kindergarten and my students are lacking the resources to close the reading gap that is widening due to internet issues, lack of time with the teacher, and limited resources at home.
My kindergarten students must learn at least 50 sight words to be able able read and write at the most basic level and succeed in their first year of learning.
Having sight word journals available for student use will make it possible for my students to have a book in their hands that they can work in daily to practice reading and writing sight words. If the internet is down or they cannot join a learning meeting, the students will have a sight word journal stocked with lessons to help them practice the words they must learn to read and write.
