My students need whiteboards and dry erase crayons to engage them in phonics and writing.
Phonics is one of the most important pieces in learning to read. Each day, we practice sounding out words and writing them in our journals, but we use a lot of paper and the students aren't as engaged as they could be with whiteboards.
My students are growing up in a low income neighborhood where they don't have access to many of the resources students in wealthier neighborhoods do.
I want to put them on a path to being strong readers that will set them up for success in later grades and life.
Whiteboards would engage the students in hands-on learning and help me do quick checks of all my students. It would save mountains of paper and I could keep them to use each year. Additionally, I can use the boards in math class to do quick checks and for them to model problems for me.
Something as small as being able to write on a whiteboard could change a child's motivation to learn to read and the course of his or her school career and life.
