PLEASE HELP Chinese, Bengali, Indian, Spanish, Korean, Persian, Portuguese, Vietnamese, Filipino, and Thai students learn English! ELLs need visuals to help them understand paragraph structure and to provide examples working in groups or individually. Movable pocket charts are used in all settings.
Multicultural students bring world knowledge to our school.
Their contributions are equally valid as others. Our school differs from most in our city, in that our ELL population is mostly Asian. Students range in grades K-5. ELLs are integrated in mainstream classes, as well as in the ELL classroom for small group instruction. Sheltered Instruction Operational Protocol is recommended and practiced. Students perform in holiday choral programs, attend events to provide school funding, and are encouraged to participate in talent shows and an entertaining multicultural dinner. Before and after school programs are offered. Some families share a home due to the cost of living. Teachers are dedicated and give a great deal of their time and money to assisting their students. The staff works for the betterment of the entire school. Students are taught to appreciate all cultures and value differences. Respect Yourself, Respect Others,& Responsibility for your actions is the school motto.
My Project
The pocket charts and stands will assist my ELLs in the writing process. They will be able to work with partners or in small groups to create sentences, and then combine sentences into paragraphs. The movable stands may be used in classrooms throughout the school. The pocket charts provide places for information on both the front and back. In lessons created to model Sheltered Instruction for ELLs, I will be able to move between classrooms. Sentence strips are moved around for revising and corrected for editing. Students are able to be assessed easily on instruction. This is vital to the improvement of state and federal writing requirements for ELLs and all students.
The impact that receiving this grant will have on my students will be visible in the growth of the writing they produce and in the display of knowledge received.
It will also be an example of how students must find a way to make their dreams come true, in that I will have accomplished an important goal, simply by asking and explaining the needs of my students.
